Constituency Dinner - Special Guest
Back in the distant days of a fortnight ago, when gatherings of more than fifty people were still acceptable, JESS PHILLIPS MP was the guest of honour at the South Leicestershire Constituency Dinner, held at the Kingsway Centre in Braunstone Town.

Tristan Koriya - What I stand for
I am a member of the Round Table, which does such great work for local causes. Every year on Christmas Day I volunteer at Lutterworth Open Christmas which provides a festive meal and entertainment for local people who need a bit of extra company at this time of the year. I have completed the three-peaks challenge four times and helped to raise thousands of pounds for various charities.
I proudly serve as an Army Reservist with the Royal Logistics Corps.
My sense of duty and caring for others comes from my parents. My mother worked in the NHS for 26 years. My father has been a factory worker for 30 years after serving in the Armed Forces.
Sarah and I are expecting our first child. I worry about the future our child will have under a Tory government. The gap between the richest and the poorest is wider than ever. I want to build a Britain that works for the many, not the few. That means building the homes we need to rent and to buy. It means keeping our communities safe. It means giving our schools the funding they need. And it means restoring our NHS to its place as the envy of the world.

Constituency Gala Dinner 2016
On Saturday 27th February 2016 South Leicestershire Constituency held its annual Gala Meal at Braunstone Civic Centre.
Speakers were Jon Ashworth MP and our own Willy Bach, prospective candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Mr Ashworth gave a speech very appreciative of Labour achievements in government and concerned for the losses in services and quality since 2010. Mr Ashworth called for the Labour party to be more robust in its statements about how good Labour's achievements were, when statements are made during the current government period.
Willy Bach talked about his campaign for Commissioner, in particular the need to support 'city' policing for those most in need in the area. Sadly most crime occurs in areas of the police authority where there is most need.

Amanda Hack - your Labour Candidate for South Leicestershire
Amanda's election address should be dropping through your letterbox any day now. Congratulations to the election team - it looks great and the contents are spot on.
If yours hasn't arrived yet, here are some key points:
- We've seen massive cuts to local services - social care, children's services, school support, youth services, all either closed or cut to the bone. The next tranche of Tory cuts will close libraries and museums. Labour is committed to a fairer alternative.
- The NHS as we know it cannot survive five more years of Cameron. Labour will hire 20,000 more nurses and 8000 extra GPs, funded by a clamp down on tax avoidance, a mansion tax on properties worth than £2 million, and a levy on tobacco firms.
- The cost of childcare has risen by 30% under the Tories. Labour will provide 25 hours free childcare each week for parents with 3 and 4 year-olds. Labour will work with primary schools to provide childcare for school-age children from 8am to 6pm, and help parents balance work and family life.

Your Labour Candidate for South Leicestershire
AMANDA HACK
Labour Party members in South
Leicestershire have selected a local councillor to take on sitting Tory MP
Andrew Robatham at the general election.
Amanda Hack, a married mum of two,
represents the Thorpe Astley ward on Braunstone Town Council.
Professionally,
Amanda works as Head of Economic Development for the Asra Housing Group – a
leading housing and regeneration provider, managing 13,500 homes in the
Midlands and South East England.
Speaking after her selection as Labour’s
choice for South Leicestershire, Amanda said:
I’m delighted that local people have backed me to take on the Tories and LibDems in South Leicestershire.
Independent figures reveal that wages are an average of £1,600 down in real terms since 2010 as prices and inflation continue to raise faster that pay packets.
Combined with an average increase of £300 on household utility bills, hardworking people in South Leicestershire find themselves in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis.
It needn’t be like this - it’s only because of the decisions David Cameron’s government has made that people who work hard and play by the rules are so out of pocket.
Living standards for the majority have fallen in 44 of the 45 months David Cameron has been in Downing Street – all whilst the out-of-touch Tory-led government hands a £3billion tax break to the top 1% of earners by cutting the 50p income tax rate.
People are playing by the rules but not getting any better off.
Ed Miliband has committed a future Labour government to delivering an energy price freeze and introducing a Jobs Guarantee to get the million unemployed young people back to work – a government who stands up for the many, not the few.
Amanda added: “I’m looking forward to
getting out on the doorsteps of South Leicestershire and making the case for Ed
Miliband’s One Nation alternative here.”
South Leicestershire Constituency
Labour Party member Lord Willy Bach, who serves as a Shadow Foreign and
Commonwealth Office Minister in the Lords, welcomed Amanda’s selection. He
said:
Amanda has a proven track record in standing up for local people – just the kind of advocate the people who have been left worse off by this government need. I look forward to working with her in the run up to the general election.

One day to go...
Writing in The Independent today, John Curtice, Professor of Politics at Strathclyde University, has Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland down as a good Labour prospect tomorrow. Clearly, he bases his prognostication on the whopping Labour vote in the city. We won't get all that tomorrow; on the other hand, the disaffected Asian vote will largely go to the independent with, in the absence of a LibDem, Labour as second preference. For once, the Labour vote in the county will be critical. We should win in the north - Charnwood, Coalville etc - but the east is a write-off, except in Melton, and Hinckley & Bosworth is never easy to call. So it is clearly important that here in the south we get our Labour votes in early, when nobody's looking, and do nothing to startle the Tories.
VOTE EARLY---VOTE LABOUR---VOTE SARAH.

Electoral Boundaries - Secondary Consultation
For those who don't agree with me about the desirability of leaving South Leicestershire consituency for the delights of Daventry (and I admit that is currently pretty much everybody) the Boundary Commission has announced the dates for its secondary consultation. That means the chance to comment on all the consultations submitted in the first phase.
This may sound like unnecessary duplication but my experience with the Local Government Boundary Commission suggests that the comments-on-comments tend to be the ones that carry most weight.
The consultation runs from noon on March 6 2012 to noon on April 3 2012. Both Branch nights, I note. Beyond coincidence, surely?

Happy Christmas!
Wishing a Happy Christmas to all members and readers, from Lutterworth Branch.
We had 2 festive Branch/Constituency events:
The annual Gala dinner of the South Leicestershire Constituency was well-attended, and included a lovely meal; music; an informative speech from Liz Kendall, (Leicester West), and was held at our usual comfortable venue of Braunstone Town. A raffle, and a most professionally executed auction of items including Houses of Commons and Lords goods, raised funds for the Constituency. We hope the Boundary Commission does not decide to break up our Constituency! Our views have been expressed to the Commission, and we await their decision.
Our Christmas Quiz was on - guess what!! - politics! It was a very successful and enjoyable event, held in Brauton-Astley, with quite stunning displays of knowledge from some participants! A very pleasant evening was passed, with festive drinks and nibbles, and the raffle raised a nice contribution for our funds! Many thanks to David for organising it again!
