And now - back in Lutterworth
Have you not voted Labour yet? These people have, and look how happy they are! In Lutterworth and villages, vote for DAVID GAIR, in Broughton and villages, vote for SANDRA PARKINSON, and in Bruntingthorpe (that's all the other villages including Fleckney) you need to be voting for LIZ MARSH.

Your Labour candidate for Broughton Division
SANDRA PARKINSON
|
I am proud to have been a
resident in Broughton Astley for over 16 years. During this period I have witnessed
positive improvements to our area of South Leicestershire.
However, I am dismayed that
traffic calming measures have still not been addressed. As your Labour County Councillor I will
seek to address the following issues:
| ||
|
Condition of highways
throughout the area
|
· Poor maintenance resulting in
potholes
· Road markings worn out
· Speeding problems
| |
|
Broughton Astley village
centre congestion
|
| |
|
Red Admiral pedestrian
crossing, Broughton Astley
|
Despite initial
support from the County Council, the offer of a zebra crossing was withdrawn.
A zebra crossing would provide a safe place to cross and deter speeding
traffic.
| |
|
Bulls Head crossroads, Broughton
Astley
|
This black-spot
is particularly busy at school bus times. A simple mini roundabout would make
traffic and pedestrians much safer and slow down speeding drivers at a busy
and dangerous junction.

BROUGHTON DIVISION INCLUDES THE VILLAGES OF
Ashby Magna, Ashby Parva, Broughton Astley, Dunton
Bassett, Frolesworth and Leire.

Speeding crackdown in Lutterworth and Broughton
Great news. Leicestershire Police are taking action against drivers who insist on speeding through our town and villages.
The speed enforcement dates are as follows: February 3 and 8; March 10 and 28; April 6 and 24; May 12 and 21; June 8 and 27.
Police have given fair warning. If you tend to be a tad heavy on the accelerator do yourself and us a favour - slow down! Don't forget that speeding fines and points have recently gone up. The penalty for using your mobile whilst driving will double in March.
This information came from Leicestershire Police's Neighbourhood Link. Why not Google them and sign up for alerts? Or you can click on the link on the right of this page. Under the nice photo of Willy Bach.

Your Local Labour Candidates for Broughton
A Better Deal for Broughton
There is no doubt
what will have the biggest impact on this side of the district in the next four
years – the massive expansion planned for Magna Park.
We welcome the new
jobs and the economic prosperity they will bring. But there is a danger – the
danger that councillors from elsewhere in the district will see the bigger
Magna Park as a money pot.
Some might try and
spend that money elsewhere in Harborough.
Others will see it
as a means of offloading responsibility for everywhere west of Husbands
Bosworth.
We in Broughton have
needs too - not just employment but affordable housing, more facilities for
families and public transport.
What we desperately need is someone willing to stand up and
shout for our rights!
Sandra Parkinson is standing in Broughton Ward
Sandra and her family have lived in Broughton Astley for fourteen years. In 2013 she organised a petition to get traffic calming measures at the junction of Croft Way and Station Road. Even the County Council agreed - but a subsequent petition about the exact siting let them shelve the project! The situation is only going to get worse with more housing and more traffic. Sandra says, "I look to the people of Broughton Ward to support me in my bid to get peace of mind on this road safety issue."
Paul Maglione is standing in Sutton Ward
Paul has lived in Broughton Astley since 2012. He is a workplace representative for Unite and joined the Labour Party because of his concerns over the NHS, zero hour contracts, and the erosion of employment rights. Paul says, "Harborough District Council must get off its knees and spend some of its windfall from Magna Park on a regular bus service to and from Broughton. Get cars off the roads and give local residents the chance of local jobs!"
d on
this road safety issue.

The Results are in...
The results are in for yesterday's Leicestershire County Council election. We did OK, but the plaudits have to go to the six Labour gains in the north of the county: Thurmaston, Loughborough South, Whitwick, Coalville, Ibstock and Measham. Lots of people thought we could win a one or two of these, but nobody dreamt we could win all six.
In the Harborough part of South Leicestershire, otherwise known as us, the results were as follows:
Lutterworth
David Gair (L) 758
Rosita Page (C) 1525
Martin Sears (I) 518
Spoilt ballots 11
Broughton
Bill Liquorish (C) 1544
Antony Moseley (LD) 183
Sandra Parkinson (L) 521
SP 12
Bruntingthorpe
Elaine Carter (L) 572
Graham Hart (C) 1555
Tim Johnson (UKIP) 723
Kevin Loydall (LD) 229
SP 7
Jo Fox her seat in Braunstone, which is great, but you have to feel for Amanda Hack who missed out on a stellar win in Enderby Meridian by 39 votes. Having been Pete Knight's agent in 1989 when we failed to take Lutterworth by 6 miserable votes, I have particular empathy. The good news, Amanda, is that we took Lutterworth for Pete by several hundred four years later.
Back in '94, though, there were issues to be fought. The County Council did things and spent money. This year, the scandalously low turnout - for us, 31.7%, 26.5% and 32% respectively - says it all. What is there to fight about with a council that does nothing, plans to do less, and spends very little except on itself? Surely the turnout of 22% in a battleground seat like Enderby Meridian makes the argument for unitary councils?
Congratulations to the winners, well done to every single candidate. Certainly in Lutterworth, Broughton and Bruntingthorpe it wasn't for want of effort. The Lutterworth4Labour team worked as hard as ever.
The full gory details can be found on the County website.

Stan and Enid
As Elaine said in her last post, members last week remembered Enid Hardy, who passed away recently. This is how we will always think of Stan and Enid ---
--- side by side and sporting Vote Labour badges!
Our thoughts are with Stan.

From the achives
As politics grinds towards its summer hiatus, you have to think laterally to find items of local demographic interest. That led me to Britain From Above, a new site from English Heritage and the National Lottery.
This is how Lutterworth looked in October 1927. There are five other aerial photos of Lutterworth. You can access them here. I don't think it would have been much of a happy hunting ground for us back then. Most of the places our supporters live aren't there! On the other hand, it would have been much quicker to leaflet.
For those whose canvassing practice extends further afield, Leicester in 1927 is here. Some city landmarks have not changed much but the East Gates one has me flummoxed.
Inexplicably, there are no photos of Broughton Astley.

Supporting independent shops
Last Friday Leicester's elected city mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, announced a new initiative to support independent shops, particularly those on major routes outside the city centre. Partnership funding is available for:
- making shop fronts more attactive
- better street signage
- making the general environment more welcoming to shoppers.
For more details, click on the post title.
What are the chances of our Tory councils in Harborough and Glenfield doing anything similar (or, indeed, anything at all) to help our struggling independents in Lutterworth and Broughton?
